Bottom Line: After 100 years in business, Schlage has nearly perfected the door lock. Their DIY smart locks are a good fit for those who value a modern look and smart home integrations.
Ahh, the age-old home security advice to lock your doors. At this point, it’s no longer advice. It’s common sense. But, we’re humans; forgetting to lock doors is still common or at least common enough to give birth to a new industry – smart locks.
We must admit, we weren’t fans when smart locks first started popping up more than a decade ago. But after we saw them in action with some of the best security systems with home automation, we’re completely sold on the idea. Beyond locking your doors from your phone, useful features such as scheduling, reminders, and rule-based home automation make smart locks a solid smart security device. You can even share and manage virtual keys, which we find safer than handing out physical keys, even to people you trust.
Just like any security device, though, you get the most value from a smart lock if you choose the right one for you. We recently did a bout of testing over two dozen smart locks and found nine really good options. Big-name lock manufacturers like Yale, Schlage, and Kwikset made this list, but our top-pick is August, being a company that started its life dedicated to making secure, smart, and reliable smart locks. Continue on to learn more about why we picked them.
System | August | Yale | Schlage | Kwikset | Sesame | Danalock | ULTRALOQ | Friday | igloohome |

August hasn’t existed for as long as the century-and-a-half years old Yale, and it’s not as reputable in lock-making as Schlage. But August knows one thing and it’s great at doing it – making smart locks. August started in 2012 as a startup smart lock company, and it has grown to be a leader in the industry. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, for example, comes with a user-friendly app that lets you control every aspect of your lock. It connects to Wi-Fi, so it hooks up with the rest of your security system. It also has a feature called Door Sense that will alert you anytime you leave your door unlocked. And of course, it works with Alexa and Google Assistant for extra convenience.
One often overlooked aspect when choosing a smart lock is digital security. It’s nice to know that the deadbolt of your smart lock can withstand kicking down, but that’s useless if a hooded hacker with a laptop can hack into it and unlock your door. As a company that specializes in smart locks, August knows that and made sure its locks are hack-proof. We found that they are encrypted using bank-grade 128-bit AES encryption. That goes for the lock itself and the traffic it broadcasts to your phone when you’re creating or using virtual keys.
We also like that August offers several options. Not as many as Yale offers, but we think there’s something for everybody. It has smart locks that connect to Wi-Fi, are compatible with smart watches, and that still can be accessed with physical keys. We even saw one model made in collaboration with Yale – our second pick for this list.

All the August smart locks above take only minutes to install and don’t require any real handyman skills. They’re compatible with single-cylinder deadbolts – the most common type of lock in the U.S. – and you can choose a design that matches your door’s aesthetics. Most models come in multiple colors and faceplates, plus there are bundles that include a smart lock, keypad, and matching door hardware if you’re interested in having everything look uniform.
Yale’s technology is superior to August, especially when it comes to making physically robust locks. It’s one of the oldest, most established lock manufacturers, after all. Beyond that, Yale’s smart locks are also more technologically advanced, especially its touch screen smart locks. They may look frail, being touch screen and all, but in our experience, they are the most reliable touch screen smart locks on the market. Plus, if you’re an Apple user, some Yale touch screen models can use Apple Key for easier access. We think that’s a nice touch… no pun intended.
We already had experience with Yale smart locks. It provides smart locks for many of the best home security systems, including our top smart home picks, ADT and Vivint. Its ability to work with other home gadgets and systems is one of Yale’s biggest selling points.
Besides that, though, we always enjoy interacting with our Yale smart lock’s touchscreen control. There are several touchscreen Yale models, from the simple YRD226 to the sophisticated Kyra Pro. We know, it sounds impractical to use a touchscreen smart lock, but that wasn’t our experience with Yale’s products. Even when we’re wearing gloves in the winter or with wet hands after playing with our kids in the rain, the touchscreen still works. Not to mention, it looks great on doors.
You do have to pay attention to the price though. With Yale’s brand name slapped onto these smart locks, they are some of the most expensive you’ll find. Most Yale smart locks hover between $250 and $300, but we’ve seen options ranging up to over $500.
Yet another well-known name in the lock industry – maybe you’re sensing a pattern here? – Schlage has adapted nicely to the digital world. Schlage’s smart lock offerings work with a variety of platforms, including Google Home and Alexa. You can even connect Schlage locks to AirBnB and turn your property into a vacation rental. Plus, Schlage places a heavy emphasis on style. As a result, you can be sure of finding a Schlage lock that will fit in with the look of your home, no matter what that look might be.
Schlage is one of the most well-known names when it comes to physical security, so it should come as no surprise that they’ve started manufacturing some of the best smart locks available today.
Schlage doesn’t just make smart locks, though. The company makes smart locks that fit in with your home. Part of that has to do with a commitment to quality and style, but part of it is about the sheer volume of different models Schlage sells. Pick your finish, pick your color scheme, pick your lock. And while all this choice could be overwhelming, Schlage offers a user-friendly website that helps you pick the exact lock you’re looking for.
Schlage’s best locks are also Z-wave compatible, which means they work with virtually any smart home device on the market. Want your TV to come on when you walk in the door after work? Schlage can make that happen. Connect your locks to Alexa, and you can control your home security with just your voice. Schlage’s flagship product, the Encode Plus is a smart WiFi-connected deadbolt with real-time activity monitoring and connectivity with most smart home platforms.
You don’t have to pay exorbitant prices for this futuristic tech, either. Most Schlage locks cost between $150 and $300 depending on the feature set you select.
As the name would suggest, Kwikset smart locks are simple to install and use. But ease-of-installation isn’t the only thing this company has going for them. Their tech-rich products seamlessly integrate with smart home platforms, and their reputation for security speaks for itself. And tech doesn’t just mean digital for Kwikset. This company’s Microban actually repels microbes on your door handles, ensuring that bacteria doesn’t build up.
Kwikset is another well-known name in the entryway security industry, and as you might expect, they offer quite a few options when it comes to smart locks. Across their product family, you’ll find numerous features including:
They also work well with a huge variety of other home automation systems and devices, including:
Simply put, they’re one of the most versatile manufacturers out there, so if you’re looking for a smart lock that will perform a highly specific function, You might want to check with Kwikset.
Let’s talk functions. After all, these aren’t just locks. These are smart locks. Two of Kwikset’s models, part of the Halo series, offer biometric scanning. That’s a fancy way of saying you can use your fingerprint to open your door. It’s safer than using digital keys and all Kwikset smart locks let you schedule regular events. Does your dog walker show up at the same time every day? Or the nanny? Set your door to open at the right moment, or give regular visitors customized codes. That way you know who came in when and how long they stayed. Kwikset locks range in price from around $200 to $300.
Open Sesame offers a unique type of smart lock that we can see a use for. In simple terms, the company produces a device that fits over your existing deadlock, turning it into a smart lock. Because they’re so unique, they require DIY skills to install. Once they’re in place, though, they’re as high-tech as any other smart lock on the market. Open Sesame locks work smoothly, for example with both Alexa and Google Home platforms.
Not ready to go full-on smart home yet? We get it. Smart technology can be expensive, and there are some kinks to work out in terms of protecting devices from hackers. A smart lock is a great way to start, though, and with an Open Sesame lock, you don’t have to change your door, your door handle, or your deadbolt. Sesame’s lock fits over your existing lock.
Best of all, you get the convenience and safety that comes with a smart lock without the expensive price tag. Sesame hasn’t been around as long as some of the other names on this list. That’s to your advantage. The company wants to disrupt the industry, so it offers low prices. Sesame is quickly becoming a major player, though. The company currently offers just one lock, but that lock is becoming a favorite among smart-home enthusiasts. You can get one for $119, but they sell out frequently, and it’s easy to imagine a day when this price may go up.
Despite the fact that it’s a modification rather than a completely new locking system, Sesame locks provide all the convenience of more expensive locks. They can be programmed with up to 99 guest keys, for example, and can send you notifications every time the lock is activated. Sesame also plays well with Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings hubs, and — get this — you can open your door just by knocking on your iPhone. How’s that for smart home convenience?
Ah, those clever Danes. Danalock is the result of a Danish father-son collaboration. It offers a sleek, modern design and includes some of the most innovative features we’ve come across in a smart lock.
We’ll be frank — this is one of the best looking smart locks we’ve seen. It’s simple and sleek with a single, easy-to-grasp deadbolt knob on the inside, and a keypad on the outside that is, dare we say, futuristic looking.
The Danalock is more than a pretty face, though. There’s impressive tech inside. For instance, the Danalock V3 allows for four different types of connectivity: Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Apple HomeKit. It’s also compatible with Scandi, Euro, and U.S. style deadbolts. It’s designed to withstand Danish winters, so we didn’t have to worry whether it would suit our New York apartment. And it can handle up to 20 different passcodes.
Its unique twist-assist function allows for easy opening — just turn the lock a few degrees before the motor takes over — or you can go full-on remote entry and let the motor do all the work for you. That’s perfect for older homeowners who may have trouble getting a traditional deadbolt open, or for any of us who come home with too many grocery bags in our hands.
Danalocks are pricey at around $300, but good design costs money.
Most of the smartlocks on this list utilize keypads or remote entry systems. A few offer biometric entry – basically, entry using a fingerprint or a handprint. ULTRALOQ doesn’t just offer biometric locks, though. That’s all they make. Thus, not only do they offer a unique product, but while other companies continue to experiment with biometrics, they’ve mastered it. No long wait times after scanning your print. It takes about a second to get into your home.
For now, biometric locks remain a niche market, but it’s a market ULTRALOQ has cornered. Every lock the company sells features a fingerprint scanner, and most let you store multiple fingerprints. Their U-Bolt Pro series can handle up to 95 different prints. We don’t have 95 friends, but it’s nice to know the pro model could let them all in if we did.
Plus, these devices can identify a print and disengage in under a second. That was perfect for getting inside before our neighbor could snag us for one of her long chats. Best of all, they are user-friendly with a sleek modern design that won’t look out of place no matter what style of door you have.
ULTRALOQ offers four primary models — their U-Bolt series, which utilizes a keypad instead of biometrics and costs $109.99; the U-Bolt Pro, which has a keypad and fingerprint scanner for $189.99; the ULTRALOQ Lever, a versatile keyless, phoneless lever-action lock for $189.99; and the Latch Series, which incorporates the company’s best features across three different models from $189.99 to $249.99.
Looking to dip your toe into the smart home world without breaking the bank or overcomplicating your life? Friday may be the solution. Friday locks don’t include the high-tech features you’ll find from other locks on this list, but that’s by design. By keeping its products small and simple, Friday removes the confusion from smartlocks, making them friendly for anyone. Plus, by shifting its focus to style, Friday can offer locks that won’t spoil your home’s design. No bulky tech to conceal, yet you can still create an unlimited number of digital keys giving you total control over who comes and goes in your home.
Smart locks are a great addition to any home, offering increased safety and convenience. They’re not always discreet, though. Enter Friday. As you might expect from a Scandinavian company Friday offers smartlocks so sleek and modern your guests won’t even notice you have them. Heck, you might forget you have them.
Don’t do that, though. These devices are too handy not to use. When our OCD kicked in on the way to work last week, we were able to pull our lock status up on our cell phone and double-check that we’d locked it.
The Friday lock costs about $140, depending on your vendor, and can be installed in about 10 minutes. It integrates with Apple HomeKit, and is available in seven different finishes so you can definitely find something that will look good with your current decor. We will say, though, this lock is pretty limited in the features department, so if you’re looking for a tech-forward smart lock, Friday might not be for you.
Igloohome locks are particularly suited to anyone looking to rent an Airbnb. Install one of the company’s deadbolts, and you can either issue pin codes or Bluetooth keys to your guests so they can come and go when they need to. Once they’ve headed home, create new codes and keys for new guests. Igloohome doesn’t just sell entry locks, though. They also have a full line of padlocks. Provide access to specific parts of your home or install them in other spots, from gym lockers to tennis courts.
We don’t happen to have an Airbnb to rent out, but we found other uses for Igloohome’s Bluetooth keys. We gave one to our neighbor who walks our dog every afternoon. In the end, that’s safer than handing out copies of keys, since we can always change the codes if we decide she’s not working out.
We bought one of Igloohome’s military-grade padlocks as well and installed it on our gym locker. And OK, our sweaty socks probably don’t need military-grade protection, but we can attest that these are serious locks that, as a bonus, offer convenience. When our racquetball partner wanted to borrow our racquet for a pickup game, we were able to give him access to our locker without leaving the comfort of our LazyBoy.
Note that these aren’t just locks. Igloohome devices sound an alarm if anyone tries to pry the lock from your door. That makes them an excellent addition to your existing home security system. They also come with an emergency jump-start feature. With the external DC9V battery you can jump-start your locks even if the batteries run out. Finally, these locks are enhanced with the latest chip technology that makes unlocking using Bluetooth quicker.
These aren’t cheap devices. You pay premium prices for locks that are both high-tech and provide military-grade protection. The Deadbolt 2S, a traditional smart lock with keypad or keyless entry, costs $189.99, or $199.99 respectivey. The Smart Padlock with improved access management costs $119.99. The Smart Keybox 3, which you can install anywhere around your home, goes for $179.99
Home automation is becoming increasingly popular, and more and more companies are getting into the game. Having a lot of choices is great, but it can be difficult to cut through the noise to find the equipment and devices that best fit your needs and budget. We’ve boiled it down for you by compiling our test results and all of the data into an easy-to-read review for each of the top 10 smart lock brands with comparisons and the pros and cons of each system. This will help you find the best smart lock system that suits your particular lifestyle and living situation.
By now you might have a pretty good idea of what smart lock you might want to purchase, but not so fast. Before you make your final decision, let’s explore smart locks a little more in depth.
Ready for your smart lock masterclass?
Smart door locks, or electronic door locks, offer an added layer of home protection and include nifty automation features. A simple tap of your smartphone screen to secure your home, from anywhere in the world? Sounds too good to be true, right? But that’s the convenience and tech-forward innovation of today’s smart locks.
Most smart locks function with electromechanical technology. They either replace your deadbolt or upgrade your existing one, and they are generally easy to install. The prices vary depending on features and technology, but they typically cost between $100 and $300 for one lock. While the prices might seem steep at first, these locks are incredibly useful in more ways than one.
Pro Tip: If you’re interested in smart locks, it’s pretty safe to say you’re into security tech. If that’s the case, you might want to check out these three robots that can help you keep burglars at bay.
A great addition to any smart home ecosystem, smart locks are controlled remotely via a companion app. Simply open the app on your smartphone, touch the screen to lock/unlock, and watch your door obey your commands from almost anywhere in the world. The features and technology get pretty advanced, as we’ll discuss in a bit, but many smart locks send real-time activity alerts, let you add permissions for multiple users, allow you to access usage logs, and the list goes on.
Smart door lock companies are at the forefront of the home automation game. They are constantly innovating their products to integrate seamlessly with third-party smart home automation systems. Often this means plug-and-play DIY setup that doesn’t take any technical skills whatsoever. So if you currently have a system like Apple Homekit, Alexa, or Google Assistant, you’re in business with a handful of smart locks.
Smart locks are ideal for people who:
And many others. Of course, there are lots of reasons why smart locks make sense. But for some people — namely Airbnb hosts and vacation homeowners — they serve a uniquely important function that makes their lives much easier. Hosts can now configure their doors with smart locks and touchpad technology. And they can grant and revoke access at the push of a button. This streamlines the check-in / check-out process and allows the host to manage their property remotely — without needing their neighbor to begrudgingly deliver a key.
While smart locks are fast-becoming a go-to solution for entryway security, the technology is not quite perfected yet. Like anything else, there are some disadvantages to consider before you make your purchase. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
But for the most part, all of these potential drawbacks can be avoided with a little bit of upfront research. That’s why we created our top 10 best smart locks list above. We cover each of these negative points and do our best to steer you in the right direction. You’ll want to consider our proprietary SecureScore for each of the products on our list. That way, you’re sure to narrow down your choices to find the best smart lock for your needs.
Now that you’ve read the reviews, the pros and cons, and a variety of information about the above mentioned smart locks. Now that you have those details, you will need to consider which features matter before you can narrow down your choices and make a purchase. The answer isn’t going to be the same for everyone.
We are going to go over a list of the most important features when it comes to smart locks, then you will be able to determine which of those features best suits your particular needs.
Different features hold more weight than others because they are the more popular features most people want. For example, automatic unlocking and locking, remote control, mobile app, encryption technology, backup systems, a retrofit lock or new lock, etc.
Here is a list of the most popular features people look for when shopping for smart locks.
The top smart locks on the market today deliver big when it comes to technology and functionality. Every smart lock offers remote locking and unlocking, but the skies the limit from there. Today’s electronic door locks allow users to issue and revoke virtual keys, monitor their security status from anywhere in the world, and even have built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities. But even those features and tech are just beginning to scratch the service.
The five most cutting-edge technological advancements in the world of smart locks include:
Advanced fingerprint identification
Welcome to the world of biometrics. Biometrics, in this case, is the technical term for fingerprint scanning. Smart locks with fingerprint scanning quite literally put your home security at your fingertips. To gain access to your home, simply place your finger on the keypad, and voila! This is more than just a neat party trick. It secures your home in the most futuristic way possible, with biometric authentication and crisp, clear OLED touchscreens. Advanced fingerprint identification is a feature that comes with ULTRALOQ, the number seven pick on our list. Look for this technology if you want to go full James Bond with your smart lock security system.
Time-sensitive PIN codes
Many smart door locks with touchscreen electronic deadbolts offer lock/unlock capabilities with PIN codes. Some companies have taken this a step further and created time-sensitive PIN code technology. With this feature, you can issue a PIN to a guest with the confidence of knowing it expires at the date and time of your choosing. This allows you to give limited access to friends, family, and service workers, all-the-while remaining in complete control of your home.
Door activity history and notifications
Most smart locks come stacked with a mobile companion app. This app can perform a number of nifty functions, like remote locking/unlocking, virtual key issuing, and some even offer activity history reports and notifications. This technology is incredibly helpful for those who get a lot of traffic in and out of their home. It’s especially useful for parents who want to know if and when their kids arrive home from school, and for those who employ housekeepers, dog walkers, contractors, etc. Door activity logs allow you to keep a finger on the pulse of who came and went. If you configure this correctly, these reports can include names, dates, times, and other activity details.
Keyless entry via proximity sensors
With this technology, you can lock and unlock your doors without having to open the app. The proximity sensors detect just how near or far you are from your door, and then locks or unlocks the door accordingly. So if you’re carrying 15 grocery bags and you’re unable to access your keys or smartphone, you won’t break a sweat. Easy in, easy out. Having keyless entry with proximity sensors is like making the VIP list for your own home. Look for this technology while shopping for smart door locks.
DoorSense (exclusive to August – our top pick for Best Smart Lock)
DoorSense is unique to August’s latest smart locks. This feature alerts you if (and when) you happen to leave your door open by accident. Magnetic technology powers the DoorSense feature, similar to entryway sensors that come with home security systems. August DoorSense is especially helpful for those with kids and pets in the home.
Finding smart locks that fit your budget and have the right features for your particular situation is the most important thing when it comes down to deciding which one to purchase. Our guides are designed to help you do just that; however, since everyone’s situation is unique, it’s important that you perform some of your own independent research as well.
Here are some questions you can ask yourself that will help narrow down your choices and find the one that’s right for you.
Do I need an automatic unlock and locking feature?
If you have kids and/or pets, or, if you frequently have your hands full to the point it’s difficult to find and use a door key to open or close your door, then yes, an automatic unlock/lock feature is probably necessary for you. However, this feature is a huge convenience for anyone who doesn’t want to have to deal with keys.
Is a remote-control feature really necessary?
A remote-control feature is necessary if you have the need to grant access to contractors, dog walkers, a nanny, guests, or even your kids when you are not home. Or if you would like to monitor and manage your door for activity while you’re not home. You can use your mobile app to remotely grant access to anyone who visits your home when you’re not there and check to make sure they locked the door when they left or remotely lock it yourself if they didn’t.
How important is it to have a backup key feature?
When it comes to electronics, nothing is foolproof. It’s a good idea to understand how you would entry your home if the power goes out, your Wi-Fi is down, your phone is dead, or something else goes wrong. Many smart locks that retrofit your existing hardware allow for traditional keyed entry for exactly this reason.
What about battery life?
Of course, you want a smart lock that has the longest battery life possible, but all batteries eventually die. What then? Well, in most cases, but not all, the corresponding mobile app will send you a notification when the batteries are low so you have the opportunity to change them before they lose their charge. Another thing to keep in mind is that some batteries are rechargeable and some aren’t.
Some companies are really smart about this. Sesame, for example, enables you to automate your replacement batteries with Amazon so they are automatically sent to you when you’re running low on power.
How secure are smart locks?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions. And the answer is not cut and dry. However, many of today’s smart locks have advanced encryption technology that uses multiple levels of military-grade encryption, as well as thoroughly tested physical security standards to help keep you safe. But you definitely want to research this aspect of any smart lock before you make a final decision.
What happens if I lose my smartphone?
Most brands that come with a mobile app will also have a feature that will allow you to log into your web portal from another device and disable or delete your phone. Then you can use any backup method such as your PIN code, a key fob, or a standard key to gain entry into your home until you get a new phone.
Are all apps compatible with Android and iOS devices?
No. Every brand’s app is different. And while almost all apps these days are compatible with both an Android or iOS device, not all of them are. Therefore, you need to confirm that your chosen smart lock is compatible with all the mobile devices you will be using to lock/unlock your door.
What is a single-cylinder deadbolt?
A single-cylinder deadbolt is one that uses a traditional key to lock and unlock the door from the outside and the inside lock is controlled using a thumb turn mechanism.
Will smart locks work on any door?
Most smart locks today are designed to work with or replace any single-cylinder deadbolt regardless of your door’s width or height. However, the thickness of your door and the backset do matter. Some smart lock brands sell add-on equipment to compensate for such issues, but keeping a door swinging freely and making sure your handle clears the jamb can be a little tricky.
Do I really need a smart lock that offers door history and notifications?
If you have anyone that comes and goes from your house, you will probably want to have a door history report that gives you the name, date, and time of when any given person used that door. And most smart locks will also notify you in real-time whenever your door is opened and closed. These features are helpful in so many ways, such as knowing when your kids get home from school and if they left the house at any time. They tell you when a contractor, housekeeper. entered your home and how much time they spent there. They can also tell you when a senior or disabled loved one left the house and when, and if they arrived back home.
It’s relatively easy to install a new smart lock, no matter how un-handy you might be. And most smart locks have the same universal installation requirements, so you shouldn’t be caught off-guard with any surprises.
Set aside 10-30 minutes for the project, have a screwdriver at-the-ready, and make sure you have installed a quality battery in your smart lock.
With that in mind, purchase great batteries. Your smart lock is only as good as your batteries. This might seem dramatic, but there’s a lot of truth to it. You do not want your smart lock juicing out on you in the first few weeks after installation. The better the batteries, the more reliable the lock and, of course, the longer it will last.
While these steps below will certainly help you along, you should defer to the installation instructions that are included with your specific smart lock. Follow them step-by-step and you’ll be up and running with smart lock protection in no time at all.
Here are the simple steps for installing most new smart locks:
Step 1: Take off the old lock
Extend the deadbolt fully. Apply tape to the outside of the door lock to keep it from falling when screws are loosened. Unscrew everything. Take out the internal deadbolt mechanism with the strike plate.
Step 2: Install new deadbolt
Slide new deadbolt into the key-lock hole. Screw-in both plates, inside and outside. Be careful not to pinch the wiring.
Step 3: Install electronic panel
Connect the wiring from the front lock to the electronic panel, ensuring that the wiring rests snug in the channel.
Step 4: Download app and add new lock
The smart lock companion app will have a simple setup process to add a new lock. You will have to “add new lock” with each new installed smart lock.
Step 5: Test the lock to ensure it works properly
Now comes the fun part. Hit the ‘lock’ command and watch the deadbolt turn on its own. Congrats! You’re now setup with smart home protection for the 21st century.
Note: These steps are only meant to give you an idea of the installation process. Again, you must use the instructions included with your smart lock when installing your new equipment.
Not all smart locks require you to completely disassemble your lock. There are some smart locks, like Sesame and Friday, that fit over your existing deadbolt for super-easy installation. While this is a nice feature, it should not be your main reason for choosing a lock — as almost all smart locks offer easy installation. Instead, choose a lock that has the features and tech that you will get the most use of.
In any event, you shouldn’t need to drill new holes into your door, as most smart door locks come pre-drilled with standard hole placement. The best smart door lock companies are competing in the department of easy, DIY install. It’s a major selling point for consumers, and so the latest and greatest smart locks can be installed in a matter of minutes, with no fuss or hassle.
The main takeaway here is that most smart door locks offer an easy installation. So whatever you do, do not be intimidated by this technology. It’s so easy that anyone can do it.
Before we dive in, it’s important to clear the air with a disclaimer. That is, it’s always smart to ask your landlord for permission before installing a smart lock in your rental unit. You’d be surprised by what they put in the fine print in rental agreements, so it’s probably best to cover your bases and get their buy-in to avoid any trouble. This is especially true for smart locks that don’t work with your existing key. Make sure to get any agreements in writing. You don’t want to lose your security deposit!
With that said, let’s discuss smart locks for apartments and renters.
August smart locks top our list for a number of reasons, not the least of which is because they are great for apartments. This specific smart lock — and others like it — are retrofitted to your existing deadbolt. This means you do not have to completely disassemble your apartment’s locking mechanism. Your apartment manager or landlord will be happy, and you can easily take it with you when you move.
The best smart locks for apartments offer easy install and easy programming. But it’s also important that you look for a solution that doesn’t require swapping out hardware — as it’s best that your key remains the same. Obviously, this keeps everything landlord-friendly, as they need access with their existing keys, too. The good news is that there are plenty of options for this type of setup. Look for a smart lock that installs on the inside of the door so that the exterior hardware can remain the same. This allows renters to continue using their traditional key if and when desired.
However, some companies manufacture smart locks that can be re-keyed to fit your existing key. Kwikset, for instance, has a rekeying system. And many other smart locks can be rekeyed to work with your traditional key.
Other important features for renters and apartment-dwellers include:
Also, look for pick-proof smart locks and smart locks that offer forced-entry protection. Many apartment complexes are safe and patrolled by security guards. Others can be dangerous, with residents experiencing break-ins, burglaries, theft, and even home invasions. With pick-proof and forced-entry protection, you’ll sleep a little easier at night. Certain companies like Schlage even claim their locks will safeguard against break-ins by kicks, sledgehammers, crowbars, and the like.
Today’s smart lock companies are constantly innovating new ways for renters to stay safe and protect their belongings. If you live in an apartment or condo, or if you rent a home, it’s nice to know there are plenty of ways to safeguard your home.
And remember, when shopping for a smart lock, look for one that can be retrofitted onto an existing deadbolt. This way the keys will remain the same for you and your landlord. That’s a win-win for everyone involved.
Although smart locks might seem like luxury devices, there are some options that fit well within the budgets. In other words, smart locks don’t have to break the bank. It just takes a little upfront research, which, surprise! We’ve already done for you. We’ve identified a few low-cost options, and we’ve highlighted what to look for in a budget-friendly smart lock.
Certain smart locks can be purchased for as low as $99. The Lockitron Bolt comes to mind. This smart lock has Sense Proximity for auto-unlocking upon approach, or auto-locking as you leave. It also sends real-time alerts when the smart lock is unlocked and your door is opened. Lockitron is a good option for renters, as it uses key match that allows you to keep your existing keys.
August smart locks are another option. Their basic smart lock starts at $149.99, and allows users remote access to their homes or apartments. It’s a great option for renters, as it works with your existing deadbolt. The no-fuss installation is fast and easy, and landlords are none-the-wiser.
Two other low-cost smart locks are Schlage (as low as $149) and Kwikset (as low as $135). Schlage boasts a touchscreen keypad for easy unlocking and entry. It also has a built-in alarm siren that’ll send burglars running for the hills. And Kwikset is a budget-friendly smart lock with patented touch-to-open technology. That’s right, simply touch the locking mechanism — and voila! — you’re in. Overall, Schlage and Kwikset are great low-cost smart locks to consider.
But remember, you do not want to sacrifice quality for a low price. You have to strike a balance. If you go too cheap, you might pay for it in a slow-action locking mechanism, short battery life, faulty functionality — you name it. So we’ve found $100-$150 to be the sweet spot for affordable smart locks.
Here are some features to look for in an affordable smart lock:

Sometimes it’s not enough to have a smart lock with app control. Sometimes you want to flex those vocal cords to lock your door and secure your home using Alexa — it is the 21st century after all. The good news is, there are many smart locks that work with Alexa. The bad news is, most require a special hub that is sold separately. But if you’re a true smart home enthusiast, you won’t mind paying extra for voice control. Don’t you want the smartest home in the ‘hood?

Want to make your smart lock a whole lot smarter? Connect it to your Google Home smart home ecosystem and step into the future. Smart locks that work with Google Home allow you to control your entryway using only your voice (and Google Assistant, of course).
Once you’re up-and-running, simply say the words and your entryway will secure itself. The convenience of Google Assistant’s remote voice control is worth its weight in gold (you can even control your lock from across the house).

It’s important to note that not all smart locks will connect to Google Home right out-of-the-box. Only a select few smart locks (like the Nest X Yale) will connect directly to your Wi-Fi and Google Home. Others require a bridge or hub to connect to your network, and this always comes at a price. The Bridge upgrade isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker, though. It’s just something to budget into your smart lock system.
Smart home automation enthusiasts have choices when it comes to smart locks. And if your particular platform is Google Home, then you’re in business with a handful of options to choose from. The setup is typically fast and easy, especially when you don’t need a bridge or hub. And controlling your smart lock with just your voice is much more than a party trick — it’s one giant step toward hands-free living.

For smart home enthusiasts, smart locks seem to be the best thing since sliced bread. So it’s no wonder there are loads of smart lock reviews all over the internet. But it’s important to remember that not all reviews are created equal.
Here at SafeHome, our reviews are the result of extensive research and testing. For instance, in our full Schlage and August smart lock reviews, we cover the important things that matter for the everyday consumer — things like customer service, value, equipment, features and tech, and ease of use. Then, we assign each device a SecureScore rating for the categories above.
Our reviews are well-rounded and tell the full story. They are also objective — sharing both pros and cons — and highlight exactly what you can expect by purchasing a particular smart lock. The important thing is that you walk away with real knowledge and the utmost confidence to make a wise buying decision. And we’re happy to say that hundreds of thousands of readers are getting the information they want and need from SafeHome.org.
The answer is … that depends. If you’re busy, have kids and/or pets, have physical limitations that make it challenging to use traditional keys, or always find your arms full, then smart locks can exponentially improve your daily life. However, if your lifestyle is more relaxed, with more time in your day, where you’re not juggling constant items, a smart lock might not be necessary.
That being said, it’s pretty irrefutable that having a smart lock is a huge convenience, regardless of whether you really need a smart lock or not. Beyond the convenience though, the security factor that comes with having an advanced locking system with multiple layers of security and encryption technology is truly the best reason to consider a smart lock. They will help prevent or eliminate the possibility of your traditional locks from being opened using “bump keys,” which can be purchased just about anywhere on the cheap.
So when you look at it from a convenience and security standpoint, then, yes, smart locks are worth the price… and then some!
