AAA’s identity theft protection system is provided via ProtectMyID, which is powered by Experian (one of the main credit reporting agencies). If you’re an AAA member, you automatically get free access to ProtectMyID Essential, which includes both credit monitoring and a decent level of identity protection. Upgrading to higher subscription tiers adds more features, like child monitoring, triple-bureau monitoring, and public records monitoring.

But AAA’s identity theft protection service is only available to AAA members — if you’re already one, we definitely recommend trying out the ProtectMyID Essential subscription since it’s free. However, if you’re not interested in a AAA membership, there are plenty of other good identity theft protection services on the market.

AAA Identity Theft Protection Pricing & Plans

AAA’s identity theft protection system comes with three tier-based subscriptions: ProtectMyID Essential, ProtectMyID Deluxe, and ProtectMyID Complete. Here’s a quick look at how much each subscription costs:

Subscription Cost
ProtectMyID Essential Free (included with AAA membership)
ProtectMyID Deluxe $10.95/month
ProtectMyID Complete $17.95/month

To sign up for ProtectMyID, you first need to be a AAA member. You can then sign up for the subscription tier that best suits your needs — you can do this via AAA’s site or by phone.

Below, we’ll take a quick look at what you get with each subscription tier:

ProtectMyID Essential

This subscription provides access to Experian credit monitoring and reports, lost wallet protection, fraud resolution support, and up to $10,000 in identity theft insurance. But keep in mind the identity theft insurance is only available to AAA Premier members.

ProtectMyID Essential also includes some decent identity protection tools, such as dark web surveillance (only for Social Security Numbers and email addresses), a one-time online exposure scan, and Identity Health Score, which tells you how likely you are to become a victim of identity theft.

ProtectMyID Deluxe

ProtectMyID Deluxe includes everything you get with the Essential subscription, and also adds other protections. This includes triple-bureau monitoring, Social Security number monitoring, real-time identity alerts via text or email, court records monitoring, and change of address alerts.

The Deluxe subscription also makes you eligible for $1 million in identity theft insurance, which is the industry standard.

ProtectMyID Complete

ProtectMyID Complete includes everything you get with the Essential and Deluxe subscription. On top of that, it also adds Experian Credit Lock (lock your Experian credit file to prevent fraudulent access to it), child identity monitoring for up to 10 kids, and dormant credit card monitoring (lets you know if activity is spotted on a card that hasn’t been used in 6 months or more).

The Complete subscription also includes more advanced identity protection services, such as social media monitoring, sex offender monitoring, and alternative loan monitoring.

Is AAA Identity Theft Protection Worth It?

Yes, but only if you’re an AAA member. If you’re not a member, signing up for ProtectMyID requires that you first become an AAA member. This means you have to pay the required AAA membership fees, and then wait on confirmation of your membership.

If you’re an AAA member, you get free access to ProtectMyID Essential, which we think is worth trying out. It’s a bit limited, but still provides decent credit monitoring and identity protection. And if you feel like the service is right for you, it’s worth upgrading to one of the paid subscriptions depending on your needs — the Deluxe subscription is great for extra identity theft protection services, while the Complete subscription is ideal for families due to its child monitoring tools.

Finally, remember that AAA partnered with Experian to provide identity theft protection. We don’t consider this a huge issue, but some potential customers might prefer identity theft protection from a company not directly connected with one of the credit bureaus.
